Fly Fishing Videos

Next Generation Brook Trout Angler

The first fish I remember catching was a brook trout. I grew up in a region that isn’t known for it’s fishing, but there is one special gem of a lake that holds some of the most beautiful brookies on the planet. Brook trout have always been my favorite Salmonid. With anticipation for Spring fly fishing here is a short video from a memorable trip last year.

Andrew Chasing Brook Trout

This was the first time that my son was able to take fly fishing into his own hands. I’ve been taking him down to my old stomping grounds each year for the past seven years to chase these fish. However, this year was different. He would leave camp snatching up a fly rod on his way out, walk to the lake and catch a couple of fish, then return to tell us about his success. No fatherly help necessary! I was very proud of him and the future that he is creating for himself in the world of fly fishing. Most of all I was excited to share this place and these fish with him in a similar way I experienced it when I was his age. This is just a teaser of a longer edit to come… enjoy.

For the past eight months, Devin Olsen , Lance Egan, and I have been working together to create the most innovative and captivating how-to instructional video on nymph fishing. The full video will be ready to launch here very soon. It’s been an extremely busy 8 months, but we’re getting soooo close and ready to launch our first trailer.

A little insight on the project, we’ve filmed Spring, Summer, and Fall. Visited three states and seven unique stretches of water. Devin and Lance have demonstrated their skills over and over so that we could capture the best footage possible to help others learn to catch more fish.

Filming on the River

If you don’t know Lance and Devin, they are both members of Fly Fishing Team USA. Their competitive experiences have driven them to seek out and find what are truly the best techniques for catching the most trout possible. With more that 20 collective years of experience between them discovering, mastering, and innovating they have fine-tuned the most effective technique on the planet.

Devin Teaching Euro Nymphing

Lance Egan Teaching Euro Nymphing

How about me, where do I fit into the picture? Well, any filmmaker can make a how-to video about fly fishing. However, for the past 8 years I have already been learning from Devin and Lance all about Euro Nymphing. I have been guiding with this technique for more than 6 years now as well. Needless to say, I love the ability this technique grants when used properly on rivers and streams. I was a fly angler long before a filmmaker, and it is hands down the most effective method I’ve ever fished. I tried to use my experience with Euro nymphing to make sure and capture the best angles and shots needed to effectively teach this method. My goal was to also make the project as visually appealing as it is instructional.

Filming on the River

The three of us combined has made for a very rewarding experience that I think will benefit many. We brought on my filmmaking friend Dominic Bohne to aid in this endeavor during some of the shoots and his experience proved to be invaluable. We were also blessed to have the Cortland Line Company behind us helping to make this project happen. All said and done we are all very pleased with the quality of the project, and are confident it will help all those who immerse themselves in it. Digital downloads and DVD’s will be available very soon. Keep an eye out, we’re likely to give a kickoff discount for all of our friends and social media followers.

Predicting Spring – Bad Weather Fly Fishing Video

Here is some footage from the past shot on a day that was so wet the GoPro was about the only camera safe to use. The wind and the rain were so bad that Kohler and I thought about calling it quits many times throughout the day. However, persistance paid off and we ended up getting into some nice fish. More importantly, our confidence increased by catching fish in those tough conditions!

Fly Fishing Tough Conditions

I start to get very excited when spring approaches. I picture the perfect days when the weather is warm and the fish are hungry. Truth be told, there are many amazing days in the spring that are this way, and they often times result in some of the best days on the water. However, even more memorable are the days when an unexpected late season snow hits, or a torrential rain soaks us to the bone. Catching fish in these conditions can sharpen our skills and give us the opportunity to prove to ourselves that we are able to overcome the elements when needed.

Fish Flop Friday

As my brother John shows here things may get a little slippery, but we are better anglers for sticking it out on days like these!
