Next Generation Brook Trout Angler

The first fish I remember catching was a brook trout. I grew up in a region that isn’t known for it’s fishing, but there is one special gem of a lake that holds some of the most beautiful brookies on the planet. Brook trout have always been my favorite Salmonid. With anticipation for Spring fly fishing here is a short video from a memorable trip last year.

Andrew Chasing Brook Trout

This was the first time that my son was able to take fly fishing into his own hands. I’ve been taking him down to my old stomping grounds each year for the past seven years to chase these fish. However, this year was different. He would leave camp snatching up a fly rod on his way out, walk to the lake and catch a couple of fish, then return to tell us about his success. No fatherly help necessary! I was very proud of him and the future that he is creating for himself in the world of fly fishing. Most of all I was excited to share this place and these fish with him in a similar way I experienced it when I was his age. This is just a teaser of a longer edit to come… enjoy.

Predicting Spring – Bad Weather Fly Fishing Video

Here is some footage from the past shot on a day that was so wet the GoPro was about the only camera safe to use. The wind and the rain were so bad that Kohler and I thought about calling it quits many times throughout the day. However, persistance paid off and we ended up getting into some nice fish. More importantly, our confidence increased by catching fish in those tough conditions!

Fly Fishing Tough Conditions

I start to get very excited when spring approaches. I picture the perfect days when the weather is warm and the fish are hungry. Truth be told, there are many amazing days in the spring that are this way, and they often times result in some of the best days on the water. However, even more memorable are the days when an unexpected late season snow hits, or a torrential rain soaks us to the bone. Catching fish in these conditions can sharpen our skills and give us the opportunity to prove to ourselves that we are able to overcome the elements when needed.

Fish Flop Friday

As my brother John shows here things may get a little slippery, but we are better anglers for sticking it out on days like these!

“The AK Way” – Amazing Alaska Fly Fishing Video

This is a fly fishing film that consists of the beauty of Alaska mixed with a lot of underwater footage of amazing salmon schools. Our flies pass by them, and often times they are seen peeling away to chase our presentations. It was fun to capture this on film! Alaska is a very special place for fly fishing. There is a broad myth that many of the salmon caught in Alaska are snagged. This has not been my experience during any of my three trips there.

Alaska Rainbow - Tungsten Embryo Fly Pattern

I filmed this in 2014 when a few of my brothers and I took an Alaska fly fishing trip that had many memorable moments. It was a good salmon run that year for the chum and silver salmon. We hooked up with a few aggressive rainbows as well. All of which ate the Tungsten Embryo egg pattern.

Big Chum Salmon

One of my favorite accomplishments of the film was by my brother Brad. He had never been fly fishing before, and after only a few days he was casting like he’d been doing it for year. He is the guy in the film double hauling and throwing the tight loops.

Big Silver Salmon - Rainy's Flies

I teamed up with Rainy’s Flies on this project. They have a great selection of flies for all species of salmon. They produce great quality flies that don’t fall apart. Check them out at http://www.rainysflies.com/

Alaska Fly Fishing with Friends

We visited our good friends the Butlers and caught many amazing fish each day. Alaska fishing has never been so much fun for me.
