Tungsten Surveyor (Jig Hook) – Fastest, Easiest, Most Productive Nymph EVER!

For the past five years or so this Lance Egan creation has been one of the top producing nymph in my arsenal. For the past year Kohler and I have been fishing the Tungsten Surveyor on a Syndicate jig hook which has been dynamite! When it comes to easy, quick to tie, and extremely effective flies the Surveyor nymph is on top of that list.

The Tungsten Surveyor jig is extremely effective Euro Nymphing, Czech Nymphing, and even indicator nymphing. The additional weight from the tungsten bead helps this pattern get down to the fish quickly and helps it stay low in the feeding zone longer during each drift.

Original Two-toned Surveyor

Tungsten Surveyor

Kohler began incorporating dark rainbow sow scud dubbing for a thorax many years ago. The darker tone seemed to add a nice component to the fly. With the jig variant it is merely a dubbing collar instead of a thick thorax. Also, this fly is flashy enough with the rainbow dubbing and the red hotspot that the pearl wing case has also been omitted. These slight changes have made this fly even faster to tie, and by no means have we seen a decline in the number of fish we catch. In fact, I have become so confident in jig nymphs that many of my nymphs are being transitioned to these hooks.

Jig Hook Benefits

There are many benefits of fishing jig nymphs including better hook ups primarily in the top of the mouth, better holding power once a fish is hooked, and fewer snags since it rides hook point up which results in fewer lost flies. There may also be other benefits, but these simple advantages have really proven to be helpful when targeting fish nymphing.

Tungsten Torpedo – Fly Tying Video

The Tungsten Torpedo- has there ever been a better name for a tungsten beaded nymph made to sink quickly and get the job done?! Kevin Compton of Performance Flies created this nymph, and it has earned a spot in many fishermen’s boxes. Rightfully so, this fly is fast to tie, and catches fish like crazy. This quick video demonstrates how Fly Tying 123’s own Derek Kohler ties this fly, and the materials he uses.

We have been fishing this fly for a few years now and it is often the top producing fly of the day. In fact, in the middle of December, just this past weekend Kohler and I fished for a couple hours on a nice rainbow trout tailwater. Once again the Tungsten Torpedo yielded the most fish and produced some very nice rainbows.

Earlier this year we were fishing a small stream that has a multitude of nice fish, including browns, cutties, and rainbows. The Torpedo was one of the top producing nymphs that day as well, as it often is. This nymph fishes well year round regardless of the season. It is particularly deadly with euro nymphing, czech nymphing, and other competitive fly fishing methods.

About a year ago we found our preferred jig hook after doing extensive research on the available types of jig hooks on the market. We came to the conclusion that the Syndicate jig hook 400 BK is superior due to it’s unique design. This hook holds fish extremely well, and has proven to be very strong. We like it so much that we offer it here on Fly Tying 123 in size 14. We also have 7/64″ tungsten beads that match this hook perfectly. We hope to expand our sizes in the near future. You can buy the hooks and beads in our shop.

Mayday Mayfly - Syndicate Jig Hook

Learn to tie the Mayday Mayfly Here

More and more fly anglers are turning to jig style nymphs these days. Amongst the Euro Nymphing groups, competition anglers have their boxes full of these flies. Many articles have been written on this subject here on the web, so for those who are not as familiar with their benefits they include 1) jig hooks ride up, which should mean fewer snags, 2) Generally with a jig hook you will stick the fish in the top of the mouth or top side of the jaw, not in the bottom near their gills which means better for the fish, and 3) the direction of the eye of the hood leads to a better hook setting angle which will lead to more hooked fish, and fewer fish lost (I believe this is why the competition folks prefer these hooks). There is also debate of the profile a jig hook gives off while drifting in the current that some anglers feel to be beneficial, amongst countless other theories that have convinced serious anglers to switch over their fly tying to this style of hook.

Derek and I have been on the lookout for a strong, sharp, affordable jig hook for quite some time. We have tried nearly every brand of jig hook imaginable. Most have a nice appearance but suffer from being weak. The last thing any angler wants is to hook into a decent fish and have the hook straighten out. For this reason we have struggled with finding a sufficiently strong jig hook, to put it simply most seem to bend out to easily for our liking.

Just this past year we stumbled across an american company (Syndicate Fly Fishing) that offers a very nice looking jig hook with a unique design. Like most brands before it, we tied up a dozen and took them to a stream full of bruisers to test their strength, and to see how well they hold fish.

We were surprised with the fish we were catching on these hooks, and the pressure they withstood. So much so that after a few emails we decided we wanted to offer these hooks to other anglers that may be on similar quests for the right jig hook. The good news is we now sell them here at Fly Tying 123 HERE!

Competition Jig Hooks from Syndicate

To pair with the Syndicate jig style hooks we have also procured slotted tungsten beads to accompany these hooks. We have been fishing both all summer and into the fall, and have been very satisfied with the quality of both.
